When it comes to site search boxes, one of biggest problems is that the search engine fails to retrieve the essential information being sought by the web visitor.

The 2007 Harris Interactive Survey of Online Customer Behaviour reports that 21% of consumers reported experiencing issues with the "search function not functioning properly" which caused them to abandon their activity and the website.(2)

Another problem is that many websites still do not have search boxes even though we now know that users require one. In fact, as Jupiter Media Matrix points out, "When navigation attempts fail, 50 percent of users will turn to search."
